Interview Series: Gen Z Meets AI #4

Hello everyone! I am Mayu, a student in the Toshie Takahashi seminar of faculty of Cultural, Media and Society at Waseda University. This is the fifth article of AI interviews with Generation Z which were conducted by seminar students.

~The world she wants to create with AI~

We interviewed Nanami (pseudonym), a third-year university student who manages both study and her work as a singer. Since she uses Alexa, Siri, and SNS on a daily basis, she is aware of how useful and smart AI is, and she thinks of AI as a positive thing.

However, she has never learned about AI in detail and only has a general understanding of its functions and uses. In this interview, we found out what kind of AI and what kind of society Nanami, who leads a busy life, hopes to see in the future.

“AI gives me time.”

Nanami has always wondered if there was a way in which could do clerical and cleaning duties more efficiently at her part-time job. She said: “If AI could take over such simple tasks, it would reduce labor costs and make work more accurate”. She also said that she would be happy if AI robots could take over basic housework duties such as cooking and laundry. Because she is busy every day, she would like to eliminate the routine tasks in her daily life which take up so much of her day and spend the time she would save on other things.

Are there any areas or situations in your daily life where you feel that you would like AI or robots to take over?

“AI exists for humans”

Nanami is skeptical about the idea that “AI will take away human jobs”. She said, “AI was created by humans for humans, so there is no negative aspect to it, as far as I am concerned”.

We asked her the following question:  “A happy AI robot society for people is 〇〇. What is the word for 〇〇? “, and she answered “Coexistence”. She said, “It is important to have relationships based on mutual respect, even if it is not between humans. “

However, it does not mean that she simply wants people and AI robots to coexist. She thinks that people need to make their own decisions and understand the advantages and disadvantages of living alongside AI robots.
